My Worst Habits

I have never been addicted to cigarettes (or any other drug for that matter). I don't bite my nails and I don't think I have any out-of-the-ordinary bad habits. But, I do have some pretty bad habits when it comes to scheduling and money.

1. Buying books and never reading them. Maybe I am ambitious or maybe I am a book hoarder, but I can tell you right now I have about ten or more books sitting on a shelf that I bought and never touched. I can't explain it. I love books. I love to read, but I just don't take the time to sit down and read them. I get very excited about the idea of reading a book, buy it and forget about it. It's a terrible habit. Sure I'll have a great book collection some day, but I won't be able to say I read them all. Yesterday, I had a turning point. I was browsing Target's book section for The Girls: A Novel by Emma Cline. When I didn't see it, my next thought was to head next door to Barnes & Noble and grab it there. I immediately put that idea to rest when a pile of unread books popped in my head. I am banning myself from buying any more books until I read the ones I already own. Wish me luck!

2. Making too many plans. I like to stay busy. Many people have called me a social butterfly. But there are times when I just over due it. This week for example, I started the week with far too many plans and all I want to do is go home and binge watch Orange is the New Black, but I can't. I have to run errands and bake cupcakes and clean. Sometimes I need to tell myself that not having plans is a plan. After my previously scheduled events on Saturday, I will be scheduling some R&R into my evenings.

3. Not setting a budget. I have divulged my terrible money habits in the past, and while I am at a more stable time in my life with a job and steady income, I have yet to really master the art of budgeting. This week was also the first time I really looked at my bank account and thoroughly looked ahead at the coming weeks to see what I have going on and how much I may need or want to have for each event. I gave myself a good pat on the back for that. Granted it's only been a few days, but I have been very conscious of my spending and saving the past few days.

Everyone has bad habits, the hard part can be really recognizing them and taking the steps to work through them. I may be 27, but I am learning every day how to be better with money or my time. It's baby steps like the ones I took this week that are ultimately going to help get me to where I want to be financially and personally. So, cheers to baby steps and breaking bad habits!
