Independent Bookstore Day: My Favorite Places to Buy Books

During April, I went on a reading spree. I have talked about this before, but I have a habit known as tsundoku. This is a Japanese slang term for when a person buys books and lets them pile up without reading them. I have an entire shelf full of books I have collected and never read. That all changed in April. Some friends and I started an unofficial book club. We started with Where the Crawdads Sing and I haven't been able to put a book down since then. I am currently on my 10th book this month and am so excited to work my way through my little library.

In honor of Independent Bookstore Day, I wanted to highlight some of my favorite local bookstores that try my best to purchase books from before Amazon or Target.

Werner Books. This independent bookstore offers both new and used books. They will even buy your books in exchange for store credit! I took a bag full of books and got $85 in-store credit. The store credit can be used to purchase used books. The store credit covers half the cost. Last week, I stopped in to pick up It Ends With Us by Colleen Hoover. They had a used copy for $8. I was able to use $4 in store credit and only had to pay $4 out of pocket. It's great for me, my wallet, and the environment.

Pressed. Pressed Books + Cafe is another great spot. I love their coffee and bakery items. If there is a macaroon in the case, I almost always indulge. The bookstore side of Pressed always has great book displays and the latest releases. I recently bought Conversations with Friends by Sally Rooney. I'm very excited to dive into that book.

What books have you been reading lately? Do you have a favorite local bookstore?
