What I Read: January 2024

I am slowly becoming a Kindle girlie. Back in December, Amazon was offering 3 months of Kindle Unlimited for free. Around that same time, Amazon was also having their Stuff Your Kindle event, where hundreds of ebooks were free for a limited time. I have always loved holding and having a physical book to keep on my shelves, but with such a great offer, I wanted to give the Kindle world a whirl. I haven't gone full-blown Kindle status yet since I am using the Kindle app on my phone, but I will say I am a fan.

In January, I read one very good ebook and one very bad physical book. I also discovered I have a new author that I can count on to get me out of a book rut. Freida McFadden is known for writing thriller books with pretty wild plot twists.

New Witch on the Block by Louisa West
⭐⭐
A single mother runs away from an abusive boyfriend and discovers she has magic. How and why she had magic all of a sudden was a little confusing. I think it had to do with the land and the house she moved into. The entire book was a bit confusing. It felt as though parts were missing and the story never quite made sense. I almost did not finish this book, but it kept me just interested enough to tolerate it. The storyline was all over the place. I would not recommend this book.

A newlywed couple, Tricia and Ethan, venture from NYC to CT to view a home for sale. Upon arrival, a snowstorm forces the couple to stay overnight in the abandoned (conveniently furnished home). The home once belonged to renowned psychiatrist, Dr. Adrienne Hale, who vanished without a trace four years earlier. Tricia finds a hidden room with all of Dr. Hale's patient sessions on tape. She starts listening to some of the tapes and uncovers information that could uncover Dr. Hale's whereabouts. The book switches between Tricia's POV and flashbacks of Dr. Hales's POV. The chapters were short and exciting, and I found this book hard to put down.

McFadden's newest book was just released on February 6. Thanks to Kindle Unlimited, it is already downloaded to my phone and ready to read! Review coming soon...

Other books I've read by Freida McFadden:

The Housemaid

The Perfect Son
